I’ve been wanting to blog this for a few days now, but the event was ongoing, so I was unsure on the legalities of posting the images & didn’t want to get anyone (or myself!) in trouble.
Tuesday evening, I was invited to The Grand Hotel, to photograph some beautiful floral centerpieces my friend Nikki was doing for the BBC Showcase 2009. The evenings theme was ‘moonscape’ – Black & white with a futuristic look & came complete with some full sized astronauts…although they were hiding in shrink wrap, so I couldn’t get any shots of them! It was a bit chaotic, as I had to get the shots during the set-up period when they were decorating the tables, getting everything ready, & doing some light & sound tests – which made the lighting incredibly tricky – very dark with (often moving!) blue spotlights, as well as a giant tungsten moon behind the stage… oh, & smoke machines
but I enjoyed it & I’m pretty pleased with the results…
** These are all straight out of camera, with a little sharpening – yes the colours were that funky!**
This first one is easily my favourite! The brilliant orange glow in the background was caused by the aforementioned moon.

Heres a few overviews of the room (it was the Empress Suite @ The Grand Hotel), to give you an idea of the bigger picture.

Onto some details!

Nikki did 2 different types of arrangements,as there were 2 different colour table setups – one light with a dark centrepiece & one dark with a light centrepiece! It looked amazing, I would have loved to go back when it was in full swing – it must have looked stunning! BTW The light one was much easier to photograph than the dark one, so when the chance arrived I got some hots of the darker one in a well lit room

& finally, I couldn’t do an event with the BBC, without getting a BBC logo on my site somewhere…

BTW Photographers – the ambient lighting was blue & the spotlights were pretty mixed, its not *just* an inability to control my white balance
These were all shot with a 5D mk1 @ the very highest ISO setting (is it 3200?), no flash, & the 50 f/1.8 *plastic crap* lens.
..
I’ve wanted to do some more commercial event photography for a while, so this as a really nice project, still close enough to weddings so I felt comfortable, but a bit different – which is always good!
If anyone has anymore commercial projects or events – I’d love to be involved! drop me an email.

I love the blue lighting – it doesn’t look at all like you got the white balance wrong! And I really like the detail shots, in particular the first one of the dark flowers. I think the commercial work should come rolling in, especially with that BBC logo blazing away for you…
Nice details, the blue lighting looks good. With digital photography there’s a temptation to try and ‘correct’ everything, which sometimes destroys the whole atmosphere. These look very moony.
Hi Simon,
Stunning work, I love the detail shots and the lighting! Can’t wait to see what the wedding season holds for you.
Cheers,
Ruth
Love these. Beautiful work.
