If you’re thinking of getting married in Sussex, let me just say, genuinely – great choice! I’m Sussex born and raised, so perhaps I’m biased – but I think it’s one of the most varied and prettiest parts of the UK (& I’ve seen the whole of the UK through my years of travels with wedding photography.) Whether it’s the sweeping hills of the South Downs, the sea breeze on Brighton beach, or one of the hundreds of tucked-away country villages, Sussex has something that just makes sense.
I’ve spent the better part of two decades photographing weddings all over Sussex. I’ve been up country lanes so narrow I had to fold the wing mirrors in, and I’ve stood barefoot on the beach to get the perfect golden-hour shot. Sussex has this way of feeling relaxed, a bit quirky, and properly photogenic without ever looking like it’s trying too hard. It’s not the glossy, brochure-perfect kind of pretty. It’s better. It’s real.
Why Sussex is a Brilliant Place to Get Married
There’s something for everyone here. If you’re dreaming of rustic barns and wildflower fields, places like Cissbury Barns, Bartholomew Barn, Rumbolds Farm or Fitzelroi tick that box. Fancy a gorgeous manor house with sweeping staircases and grounds for days? Pelham House or Goodwood might be your speed. Or maybe a Brighton Bandstand ceremony followed by fish and chips on the beach? Been there. It was brilliant.
And don’t even get me started on the light. Honestly, the Sussex light does half my job for me. There’s a softness to it, especially late in the day, that makes everyone look like they’ve stepped out of a film. If you’re into those natural, romantic, unscripted wedding photos (and let’s be honest, if you’re here, you probably are), then this part of the country is an absolute dream.
But the real charm of Sussex isn’t just the venues or the views — it’s the vibe. There’s a laid-back, unshowy feel to most weddings I’ve photographed here. Less about ticking boxes and more about throwing a great party with the people you love. Sussex lets you do that. It’s the kind of place where your nan can sip Prosecco in a wildflower meadow and it somehow feels totally normal.
“Less about ticking boxes and more about throwing a great party with the people you love.”
Next up, I’ll walk you through some of the best wedding venues in Sussex — and a few hidden gems that don’t make the usual lists but probably should.
A Few of My Favourite Sussex Wedding Venues
There are a lot of wedding venues in Sussex — but a few consistently stand out for all the right reasons. These aren’t just pretty backdrops (though they are stunning); they’re the sort of places where the whole day flows effortlessly, the staff actually care, and the light hits just right. These are all places I have tons of experience at as both a wedding photographer and a videographer based in Sussex.
Firle Place
A Georgian manor tucked into the South Downs, Firle brings serious elegance without tipping into pretension. There’s a real sense of occasion here, but it still feels grounded. The courtyard and gardens are a dream to photograph in — everything looks good in that soft Firle light. The Riding School is the most amazing space, I’ve seen it decorated in some tryuly beautiful ways. If you want a proper country house wedding without the stiffness, this is it. I’m proud to be on their recommended supplier list.
Not to mention the nearby church and the lovely Peter, the Vicar who oversee’s proceedings there. Bit of a local legend, that one!
Pelham House
Right in the middle of Lewes, Pelham is slick in the best way. It’s got that classic-meets-contemporary vibe nailed. The getting ready spaces are bright and calm, the ceremony room is classic, timeless and has big views out of the gardens, and the terrace is ideal for drinks, canapés, and people-watching. It handles both summer heat and winter chill without breaking a sweat, and the staff run a tight ship without ever being pushy. I’m lucky to be their recommended photographer, so I’ve seen it across all the seaons and it always delivers.
Cissbury Barns
Barn weddings can blur together after a while, but Cissbury has something different going on. Not just that is 10 minutes from my house…. Tucked away near Findon, it’s secluded without feeling remote. There’s a softness to the place — in the light, the layout, and the way couples just seem to relax when they arrive. It’s stylish without being styled within an inch of its life, and the views are knockout.
Long Furlong Barn
Another one close to my house, but opne I’d reccomend even it it weren’t… This one nails the sweet spot between rustic and refined. The flint barn is beautiful in its own right, but the whole space has been thought through really well. Light pours in, the courtyard makes a great social space, and it somehow always seems to run like clockwork without feeling rigid.
The Ravenswood
Set in the Ashdown Forest, Ravenswood has that slightly fairytale feel, but not in a cheesy way. There are little woodlands, a lakeside spot, and some seriously pretty gardens. Ceremony outdoors? Easy with the Castle. Cosy indoor vibes? That too. It works in all seasons, and the staff are properly invested in making it feel personal.
Findon Manor
This list is a collection of amazing venues close to my house. Findon Manor is one of those venues that just feels right. It’s not flashy – it’s elegant, refined and full of charm. It’s sophisticated but not fussy – the goldilocks zone.
The garden’s perfect for a relaxed summer garden party, and the team there know exactly how to keep things smooth.
Goodwood House
This is one for couples after something with serious grandeur. The interiors are full-on stately – ornate painted ceilings, dramatic staircases, original Canaletto paintings (a favourite of mine!!) – the works. But it never feels cold. There’s warmth to the experience here, and they’re so well-versed in handling big days with grace.
Brookfield Barn
A purpose-built barn that somehow manages to avoid feeling too clinical or corporate. The flow of the venue is spot-on: great prep space, a light-filled ceremony room, a killer terrace overlooking the lake. It’s one of those places that just works, visually and practically.
Balcombe Place
Balcombe is a different kind of stately — grand, yes, but also wildly characterful. Every room feels like a set from a different film, in the best way possible. The ceremony room is the stuff of dreams with its giant marbel fireplace. The house has presence without being overwhelming, and it offers that rare balance of historic charm and relaxed ‘it’s my house for the weekend’ hospitality. If you’re after something unique, slightly opulent, but totally comfortable, this place nails it. The nearby Worth Abbey is a top spot to get married as well.
Upwaltham Barns
Tucked into the South Downs, this venue is a favourite for a reason. It’s pretty without being precious. The courtyard is always buzzing, the getting ready cottage is calm and lovely, and the indoor spaces are ideal for soft, flattering light all day long.
Southend Barns
Every detail at Southend feels intentional. The ceremony space is sleek and bright, the gardens are made for mingling, and the barn itself balances rustic character with a clean, modern finish. I’ve photographed weddings here in every season and it never lets me down.
Fitzleroi Barn
A lovely, relaxed family-run barn in the West Sussex countryside. Fitzleroi has that easy charm that makes everyone feel at home. The courtyard is great for summer mingling, and the indoor space gives you the flexibility to keep things simple or go all-in on the details. I’m pleased to be on their recommended suppliers list too.
Farbridge
Tucked in the rolling hills near Chichester, Farbridge is effortlessly elegant without feeling overly polished. The barn and adjoining spaces are flooded with natural light, and there’s a calmness to the layout that seems to put everyone at ease. It’s one of those venues where the day just flows — no awkward transitions, no rushed moments, just a beautiful space that works with you, not against you. These venues all have something special — not just in their buildings or gardens, but in the way they make people feel. And that, in the end, is what comes through in the photos.

“Having Simon there on our wedding day was lovely… his calm and kind energy helped keep us calm too! We had great fun with him throughout the day, and there was never a moment that felt too imposing or staged.”

Planning Tips and Timing
Let’s talk about timing – because honestly, how your wedding day flows can make or break how it feels. Sussex gives you options: seasons, scenery, flexibility. But a few thoughtful choices can mean the difference between feeling calm and present, or like you’re racing a stopwatch in your best shoes.
Let’s start with the seasons. Spring in Sussex? It’s the dream. The countryside turns lush and green, flowers are out in full force, and the light is soft and flattering. You’re not dealing with peak heat or the high summer chaos — just long-ish days and golden sunsets that happen at a decent time. Not too late. That’s a big win.
Summer obviously has its charm, warm evenings, outdoor ceremonies, ice cream vans (count me in) — but bear in mind the sun is high (and harsh) for a lot of the day, and golden hour doesn’t hit until late. That means portraits at 8:30pm, when folks are deep into their wine and dancing. Winter weddings? Gorgeous in their own right, but you’ll want to plan early ceremonies to catch the light. A 3pm “I do” in December might mean your portraits happen in the dark.
The Schedule – No matter the time of year, I always suggest building in breathing space. Buffer time is magic. Make your drinks reception longer than you think — it gives space to relax, mingle, and grab those natural, in-between moments. And don’t short-change the morning either. Give yourselves time to get ready without rushing. A chilled morning sets the tone for the whole day.
Portraits. When it comes to portraits, I keep things simple. We’ll do a few quick shots after the ceremony — the ones your mum wants for the mantelpiece — then plan to sneak away around sunset for the good stuff. That’s when the light is soft, the nerves are gone, and the photos really sing.
First looks? If you’re considering one, I’m all for it. They can be emotional, grounding, and a nice way to have a quiet moment before the madness. Plus, logistically, they help build in more photo time early on. The only caution is making sure your schedule — and your vendors — are in sync. Oh, and if guests are arriving early, be strategic about where you are so you don’t get spotted.
And a quick heads-up: Sussex isn’t immune to traffic. Goodwood events can bring the surrounding roads to a standstill, and summer Saturdays get busy — especially near the coast. Early ceremonies can help guests arrive stress-free.
Bottom line? A little bit of extra space in your schedule goes a long way. Let the day breathe. It’s not about cramming in more stuff — it’s about giving yourself the freedom to enjoy it.

No kickbacks, no fluff — just genuine recommendations based on experience.

Hair Stylists
Because good hair isn’t just about looking great — it’s about feeling like you and not having to think about it again for the rest of the day. These stylists are not only talented but genuinely lovely to be around during the morning buzz:
- Gavin Harvie – Often part of the ‘bridal dream team’ with Nadia Harper, I love working with Gavin and our paths have crossed many times now. Gavin’s style is effortless, polished, and tailored to last all day. He’s great with all hair types, super calm under pressure, and just a genuinely brilliant human to have in the room.
- Nadia Wyatt (Petal Blush) – Yes, she’s here twice — because she’s that good. In addition to makeup, Nadia’s relaxed, romantic hairstyling is elegant without being overdone. Always smiling, always helpful, and totally tuned into the needs of the day.
Florists
Florals can completely change the feel of a wedding day — from ceremony arches to buttonholes. These floral artists not only create show-stopping arrangements but bring calm, creativity, and real-world experience to your day:
- Tony Dunn Flowers – A good friend and an absolute legend. I’m lucky to cross paths with Tony almost every weekend during the summer, and every time it’s a joy. Based in Brighton and East Sussex, Tony has a reputation for friendly, stress-free service and absolutely stunning arrangements. He’s one of the few florists who makes it all look effortless.
- Go.botanica – Ethical, seasonal blooms with a bit of Brighton edge. They’ve got a ready-to-wear wedding collection that’s perfect for couples who want beautiful, no-fuss florals without spiralling into overwhelm. Fresh, local, and seriously lovely work.
- Fig & Flower (Zuzana Hewer) – Based in Burgess Hill, Zuzana brings a garden-style elegance to everything she does. Her work is romantic, scented, abundant — but never overdone. She puts her heart into every stem and tailors each arrangement to suit your story, not someone else’s Pinterest board.
Caterers
Great food is one of the biggest joys of a wedding — and the good ones help everything else flow, too. Here are a few names that have stood out for the right reasons:
- Food Glorious Food – Based in Sussex and known for proper flavour-packed menus, they balance elevated dining with easygoing vibes. Whether it’s canapés that don’t skimp or mains that land hot and on time, they just get it right. I work with FGF a lot at Firle Place, who recommend me to their couples regularily.
- The Gourmet Hog Roast Company – For when you want something a bit more relaxed and hearty, these guys bring the full works. Crackling, slow-cooked meat, veggie options that aren’t sad afterthoughts — and it smells incredible.
- Fork and Field – Seasonal British menus with a focus on presentation and service. Slightly more formal, but never fussy. If you’re leaning toward multi-course dining without veering into silver service awkwardness, they’re a great shout.
Food trends come and go, but happy guests always remember the meal. If you’re not sure what route to go down — plated, sharing platters, barbecue in the garden — I’m always happy to weigh in based on what I’ve seen work well.
Bands & DJs
The right music makes everything hit better — the walk down the aisle, the first dance, and the late-night kitchen disco. Whether you’re into brass bands, classic soul, or a DJ who knows when to drop the good stuff, these folks know how to read a crowd:
- The Deloreans – High-energy, crowd-pleasing and slick without being cheesy. I’ve seen them fill the dancefloor more times than I can count.
- Mister Kanish – A proper live band with a great mix of vintage and modern hits. They know how to take your brief and spin it into something people won’t stop talking about.
- Mango DJs – Brighton-based and brilliant for keeping things flowing across all ages. Super professional and great at tuning into the mood of the room.
Live music or playlists, solo acoustic sets or full-on brass — whatever your taste, a good music setup is the glue between all the big moments. Let me know what you’re into, and I’ll point you in the right direction.
Wedding Videography
Oh — and if you’re after a wedding videographer that captures the day without turning it into a production set, that’s something we do too. Our films are relaxed, honest, and story-driven — just like the photography. No drones buzzing overhead during the ceremony, no awkwardly staged moments, just real memories in motion.
