Angela & Matt’s wedding at The Party Field in Lewes, East Sussex

Angela and Matt’s wedding at The Party Field was one I’d been looking forward to for a while. From our early conversations it was clear they knew exactly what they wanted. Not just a wedding, but a proper celebration. Thought through, well organised, but still relaxed and generous in spirit. As a Sussex wedding photographer, those are always the days that work best. When the planning is solid, everyone can simply enjoy it.

Their ceremony took place at the Meeting House at the University of Sussex, a meaningful choice for Angela as an alumni. It’s a distinctive space to photograph, full of colour and light from the stained glass panels, and it gave the ceremony a slightly different feel from a traditional church setting. Alongside the blessing, they included a Screech-In in honour of Angela’s Newfoundland heritage. It involved a shot of screech and the kissing of a cod, which certainly kept things lively and set the tone for what was to come.

Afterwards, everyone made their way to The Party Field in Lewes. Set against the backdrop of the South Downs, it’s a venue that gives couples real freedom to build the day their way. For anyone planning weddings in Sussex with a festival edge, it’s an ideal canvas. Angela and Matt made the most of that freedom. Bell tents, live music, lawn games, street food, an ice cream van and a wedding pie feast. It was blisteringly hot, the sun high for most of the afternoon, and the whole field had that summer hum about it.

Angela is a professional comedian on BBC’s Mock The Week, and with many of their friends in the same world, the speeches were always going to be strong. They did not disappoint. But what stood out wasn’t just the humour. It was the care. Every detail had been chosen with their guests in mind. Picnic snack bags, shaded seating, things to do between courses. It felt considered without feeling controlled.

As the evening light dropped over Lewes and the South Downs, the party shifted up a gear. Music louder, dancing looser, people fully in it. Sussex wedding photography often means working with big skies and open landscapes, and this was a perfect example. A festival-style wedding in East Sussex that felt both expansive and deeply personal.
