Alice & Greg’s Cowdray House Wedding in Sussex

Just before Christmas, Alice and Greg were married with a ceremony at St Thomas A Becket Church in Havant before celebrating with a beautiful Cowdray House reception. As a Sussex wedding photographer, winter weddings are something I know well, and a Cowdray House wedding at that time of year brings a very particular atmosphere. Short daylight hours, unpredictable weather and the kind of low light that can either work against you or create something special.

Alice had always known that a late December afternoon ceremony would mean cold air and early darkness. As it turned out, it also meant rain. But Cowdray House works exceptionally well in winter. The scale of the house, the warmth of the interiors and the depth of its character mean that even when the weather closes in, the day never feels compromised.

Alice got ready at her family home in Hampshire, a house she had grown up in. There was history in the walls, small details that meant something, and a calm build-up before heading to the church that had long been part of her family life. After a heartfelt ceremony, we made our way through the rain towards Cowdray.

By the time Alice and Greg arrived at Cowdray House, dusk was setting in. We had already discussed using the interiors for most of their portraits, planning around the Great Hall and quieter corners of the house. Then, unexpectedly, the rain stopped and the sun pushed through. It lasted perhaps fifteen minutes, but it was enough. We stepped outside quickly and used that brief winter light against the backdrop of the Cowdray Estate. Some of the softest, most generous light I have worked with in winter.

The reception took place in Buck Hall, with an enormous Christmas tree and roaring fireplaces setting the tone. It felt festive without being overdone. Speeches were warm and emotional, dinner long and relaxed, and the evening moved easily into dancing and laughter.

A Cowdray House wedding in winter asks you to be adaptable, to read the light and respond quickly. As a Sussex wedding photographer, those are the days I enjoy most. Alice and Greg trusted the process, embraced the weather, and ended up with a day that felt both grand and deeply personal.
