Katie & Charles – Summer Wedding at Firle Place

A summer wedding at Firle Place is always special and has a particular kind of energy. Especially on days like these when the sunlight holds all day and slowly deepens into something richer by evening. Katie and Charles brought their own momentum to it. Warm, bright, bold in colour and full of people who were clearly ready to celebrate them properly.

Katie began the morning at her mum’s house, surrounded by the sort of atmosphere that only comes from long-standing family history. There was laughter early on, but also that steady undercurrent of feeling that runs through a day when everyone knows it matters. From there it was on to Firle Church, where the tone shifted slightly. Heartfelt and Generous – You could sense how much Katie and Charles mean to their friends and family. They are the kind of people others will show up for.

Drinks followed on the lawns in front of the Georgian Riding School, the house standing quietly behind it all. The light kept changing throughout the afternoon, moving from strong summer brightness to something softer and more golden. Inside the Riding School, long tables filled quickly and the atmosphere lifted again. Speeches were deeply supportive, emotional without being theatrical. As the sun dropped, it streamed through the arched windows and backlit the room in a way that felt almost unreal. That ethereal light caught the edges of faces, glasses and perhaps, a few tears.

Katie and Charles are popular in the truest sense. Since their wedding I have photographed a number of their friends’ celebrations, and on a later visit to Firle Place I found them there again, revisiting the church and reliving it all. That loyalty says a lot. The affection that surrounded them on their wedding day was not surface level. It was built over time.

As the evening drew in and the sunset deepened into something rich and warm across the grounds of Firle Place in East Sussex, the dance floor did not empty easily. It was full of life from beginning to end. The kind of wedding where you hesitate before packing away, because it feels like something else might happen if you wait just a little longer.
