DOCUMENTARY WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHER SUSSEX

Telling the story of your day, as it unfolds.

I’m Simon, A Sussex based Wedding Videographer and Photographer.

I’ve covered over 500 weddings across photo and film. So, you’re in very good hands.

I document weddings in film in the same way I do in photography. Calmly, unobtrusively and with a focus on people, their relationships and the moments that matter.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve built something I’m really proud of – an informal documentary approach to videography – that’s both unobtrusive and truly captures how days feel, not just how they look.

It’s about how the day feels as it’s happening – minimal gear, minimal intrusion.

It’s about people, not performance.

Some couples choose film on its own.

Others pair it with photography for a more complete record of the day.

Either way, the aim is the same: to preserve what it felt like to be there.

A Calm, Unobtrusive APPROACH

I approach videography in the same way as my photography. Quietly & calmly – stepping in only when it is genuinely helpful, whether that means keeping things moving, offering a little gentle direction, or simply knowing when to fade into the background and let the day unfold naturally.

I cover the day alone, with minimal equipment – blending into the atmosphere and allowing events to unfold naturally. The experience of the day comes first.

Working across both photography and film means the perspective stays consistent and the day isn’t interrupted.

The couples I work with are often not drawn to being the centre of attention. They want to spend the day with the people they love and not feel like they are performing for the camera.

So my approach is always centred on people, not performance.

“Having Simon there on our wedding day was lovely… his calm and kind energy helped keep us calm too! We had great fun with him throughout the day, and there was never a moment that felt too imposing or staged.”

Frequently asked questions

I make wedding films in a purely documentary way, which means most of what I video happens naturally rather than being directed. I’m constantly paying attention to what’s unfolding and responding to it, rather than setting things up. This means the day flows smoothly – without someone directing, intefering or otherwise changing the feeling of it all.

That said, I’m not hands-off to the point of being absent. I’ll give light, confident direction where it genuinely helps but the aim is always to keep things relaxed and unforced. Nothing stiff, nothing overly choreographed.

Most couples I work with tell me they don’t feel comfortable being in front of the camera, and that’s exactly who this approach works best for.

I tend to sit somewhere in the middle – present, aware, and helpful when needed, but never intrusive.

Most of the day I’m quietly observing and anticipating moments as they happen. If something needs a gentle nudge – I’m happy to help keep things moving without turning it into a production.

The goal is that you’re able to stay present with your friends and family, rather than feeling managed or pulled away.

Most couples I work with want their day covered from getting ready through to the early part of the evening, essentially from when things start to feel real, to when the celebrations are properly underway.

I don’t work to rigid, minute-by-minute schedules. Instead, I think in terms of the natural shape of the day: preparations, ceremony, time with guests, portraits, and the evening atmosphere.

When you get in touch, we’ll talk through what your day looks like and what matters most to you, and I’ll advise on what level of coverage makes sense. The aim is always to give you space to enjoy the day, without feeling rushed or watched.

Occasionally, yes – most couples hire me to cover both sides of the story, but occassionally I work alongside other photographers of videographers.

The most important thing is that my style and approach works with whoever else you are considering – I’m all about keeping the day calm, relaxed and unobtrusive, so consistancy between both videographer and photographer is important.

Absolutely, many of the weddings I’ve been a part of across Sussex have taken place in country houses or in marquees in private residences. There’s something very natural about hosting a wedding in a marquee – the softness of the light and the intimacy of the space lends itself well to my relaxed, informal and unobtrusive approach. I love making films for marquee weddings, especially those in a garden that means something to the couple – many of my favourite weddings have taken place in a parents garden and this makes the films all the more special – the details and establishing shots mean all the more, they’re not just ‘pretty flowers’ – they’re ‘Mum’s precious Aliums that shes been growing for years’. Those connections are what make films special.

I’m not focused on packages or length of coverage, I keep everything intentionally simple. Rather than working from fixed length packages, I focus on what the day actually needs.

In practice, this means I’ll work with you to understand the overall shape of your day, whats important to you and how best to document it, so we’re not worrying about start times or end times during the day itself.

I’m based just outside of Brighton and cover weddings all across East Sussex & West Sussex, I also often venture further afield into Surrey, Hampshire, Kent & London. Genuinely though, if you’re planning a people focused day and my approach sounds like a good fit – I’ll travel wherever you need me.
